The Roman Phalanx was a group of roman soldiers who moved across the battlefield as a single unit. They were a superior force in strength and hazardous to cross. The family in The Grapes of Wrath were the same way.
The Definition of a Phalanx As the second definition states, the Joad family is most certainly an iconic example of a phalanx in a more modern state. Their comradery and lasting bonds never cease to remain strong throughout conflict in the story. They travel together and protect eachother, aiding to make decisions for the good of the group rather than individual benefice.
